Sitting With Sadie
we sat
your hand in mine
addled mind and mindfulness
you adrift
somewhere in the realm of
dream
sleep
confusion
lost in the folds of consciousness or
perhaps not lost at all
just far away perhaps
on a plane so much
higher and exalted that
you could not recognize
me
this world
this ordinary room
not knowing where to
find you, or if I could
find you, or if you needed
finding
I did the only thing
I could think to do
I took your skeletal hand
in mine, and through that embrace
tried to let you know that
I was there that you could
use me could
take of my energy and strength
my serenity and resignation
whatever you might need
unexpectedly
I lost myself in
being there for you
and I was freed
and then
you died
